About Port O'Connor

Port O’Connor, Texas is a small fishing town on the Texas Coast a little more than half-way between Houston and Corpus Christi. It is often known as the “Best Kept Secret on the Gulf Coast” for its relaxing, laid-back atmosphere, and numerous fishing and boating opportunities.

Located almost mid-way between Corpus Christi (2 hours) and Houston (2.5 - 3 hours) and just 3 hours south of Austin, Port O'Connor is a coastal retreat that is easily accessible to anyone in the Gulf Coast region. Whether you’re coming for the first time or a regular “weekend local” – Port O’Connor is driving distance from major cities, yet offers first-class fishing, hunting, birding, and beaching opportunities for all.

Birding Trips are available on a seasonal basis.

Port O’Connor is primarily known for its fishing – especially its wide variety of species including redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, and striped bass. The Intercoastal Canal runs along Port O’Connor, connecting to the Matagorda Ship Channel and stopping at the bay front where the Gulf jetties intersect which makes for great fishing. You can additionally get offshore easily to fish for species such as snapper, ling, king, blackfin tuna and more.

While the fish can usually always be found in POC, it’s also known for its hunting and birding. Duck, Geese, Hogs – no matter your preference, POC has something for everyone. Expert fishing and hunting guides are also eager and available to take you on the trip of your life.

Matagorda Bay Beachfront Park

Port O’Connor features King Fisher Beach and the Matagorda Bay Beachfront Park that is perfect for families, groups of friends, or individuals. You can drive, walk, or bike to the area and enjoy the pier, beach, swings, picnic tables with BBQ pits, public restrooms/shower facilities, and a covered pavilion.

Close by is Matagorda Island (56,688 acre offshore barrier island). Access to the island is by private boat or charter boat only. Here you’ll experience Texas Beaches au-natural (no groomed beaches). Here you can enjoy Sunday Beach, hunt, bike, camp, fish, hike, or view wildlife. TPW also periodically offers birding trips on the island, which is featured on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.

Whether you are coming for the fishing, hunts, birding, or beaching opportunities, Port O'Connor has something to offer every member of the family. Our condo/house rental options abound, and we can even accommodate corporate groups, small and large. We look forward to seeing you soon!
