Situated almost midway between Corpus Christi (2 hours)
and Houston (2 1/2 - 3 hours) and a few hours from Austin (3 hours),
Port O'Connor's location makes it a coastal retreat that is easily
accessible to visitors and "weekend" locals who want a vacation
home that is within driving distance from major cities, yet offers
fishing, hunting, birding and beaching opportunities for family
and friends.
The Intercoastal Canal runs along PO'C,
stops at the bay front and connects to the Matagorda Ship
Channel where the Gulf jetties intersect and make for triple
the fishing. One of the many reasons people brag about the
fishing here is the variety. No matter which way the wind
blows, fish can be found... eventually. Depending upon the
wind, you can get offshore easily with the Gulf jetties right
out your back door, or if it's too rough to go out for snapper,
ling, king, blackfin tuna and the like, stay in and fish the
Gulf jetties for trout or redfish. If it is still too rough
for you, run and hide in the back bays, or wait for another
morning and fish "the surf" off Matagorda Island. Hunting,
from duck to geese, to hog, is also a very popular pastime
here. There are fishing/hunting guides who can take you on
the trip of your life.
And, when your family doesn't share your interest
in fishing, they can drive, walk, or bike to the Matagorda Bay Beachfront
Park. This park has newly installed public restroom/shower facilities,
swings, covered/cemented picnic tables with BBQ pits and a large
covered/cemented pavilion for larger gatherings. Or, they may choose
to take a cruise on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Ferry out to Matagorda
Island. There they will experience Texas Beaches au-natural, no
groomed beaches here. The ferry has daily runs during the summer
to Matagorda Island that depart and return every few hours so you
can tailor your stay (hours) to your needs. TPW also offer birding
trips on a seasonal basis. This area is also noted on the Great
Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
Whether you are coming for the fishing, birding or beaching opportunities,
Port O'Connor has something to offer every member of the family. Our condo/house
rental options abound and we can even accommodate corporate groups, small
and large. We look forward to seeing you soon!
